Programme Note

The most famous piece for cello and orchestra has to be the concerto written by Elgar.  Written in the aftermath of the first world war, it encapsulates a sense of the tragedy of war.  HSO will perform this glorious piece with celloist Joseph Spooner.   The concert offers two more famous works, music from Smetana's opera, 'The Bartered Bride' and Brahms' first Symphony.
