Programme Note
Ensemble East, a brand-new chamber orchestra based in East Anglia, is planning its inaugural concert in Norwich, at the Octagon Chapel, on 13th July at 7.30 pm.
This orchestra consists of some of the best and most talented players in the area. It performs in various forms: as a full chamber orchestra, as a wind ensemble of various types, as a mixed wind and string chamber group and as a string group.
On this occasion they will be performing as a purely string ensemble playing music by Elgar and Mendelssohn, including the fabulous Mendelssohn Octet.
They have a fresh and open-minded view of music in general, taking trouble to investigate various styles of playing and treating each piece of music as a unique and special thing.
The Concert combines various well known and less well-known works to produce a varied and very special program that is very exciting. The well-loved Elgar Serenade for Strings is followed by Mendelssohn’s Octet, scored for double string quartet, a challenging piece for the players and pure joy and excitement to listen to.
Less known are Mendelssohn’s string symphonies, rarely heard but truly beautiful. The 9th may well be the best of them.
Ensemble East often performs without a conductor, this concert is no exception; the effect of this is to create a more intimate atmosphere; it demands more of the players but repays he effort with pure vibrancy. This intimacy is enlarged by the small size of the ensemble playing in the beautiful and resonant Octagon Chapel on 13th July.
