Programme Note

Shipwreck!

The story of the chance meeting between Philip the Handsome (Duke of Burgundy, King of Castile and Archduke of Austria), shipwrecked on the English coast with most of his court and Joanna the Mad, his queen – and King Henry VII.  On a large variety of instruments of the day, including shawm, viol, recorder, crumhorn, harp, pipe & tabor, The Border Waites perform music that was known to Henry and Philip. The programme is interspersed with readings and comments, describing the life of a musician of the court, observing the events of that fortuitous meeting and how the vicissitudes of medieval international travel are surprisingly relevant today!
