Programme Note

Beethoven’s songs are perhaps the least familiar of his output yet he wrote over 170 folksong settings, mostly in English, and almost 100 lieder including what is regarded as the first song cycle: An die Ferne Geliebte.  The lieder communicate his innermost feelings and as they seem not to have been performed in public during his lifetime were part of his private output.  To this remarkable repertoire, Joshua Ellicott brings an outstanding ability to communicate texts which with his lyric tenor voice makes him an ideal interpreter of this most personal music, here complemented by the expressive sound of the fortepiano.

This concert will be premiered live on our YouTube channel on Wednesday 25 November at 19:45. The performance will also be available to watch on demand afterwards: https://www.youtube.com/c/YorkConcerts/
