Programme Note
Elgar's Overture Cockaigne is an affectionate portrait of London at the time of Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee in 1897. It captures the romance and excitement of the city in celebratory mood.
York Bowen's Viola Concerto is one of the, still not widely known, treasures of a late romantic English composer whose music fell foul of twentieth century artistic fashion. Our soloist, Lawrence Power, is one of the most highly regarded violists. His exemplary recording of this tuneful, energetic and beguiling work was described The Times as 'beyond criticism'.
Holst's name is known throughout the world for his much-loved suite The Planets. Its attractive and imaginatively scored music symbolises the unfolding experience of life from youth to old age through the astrological associations of the celestial bodies.
