Legend says that the swan sings one sublime song in its life – just before death. If there were ever a ‘swan song’ to perfectly reflect this metaphor it is Mozart’s final composition – his Requiem, a masterpiece of drama and passion.
The enigmatic circumstances of the composition – the mysterious commission, the death of Mozart, the secret completion by students – have ensured a continued fascination with the work, but above all it is the music that endures: the poignant Kyrie, the powerful Dies Irae, the affecting Lacrimosa.
The Royal Choral Society has been performing this choral favourite since the choir’s formation in 1872. In this, their first concert in Croydon for 50 years, they will also perform two much-loved anthems by Handel including the epic ‘Zadok the Priest’. The choir will be joined by Fairfield Halls’ resident orchestra, the London Mozart Players, who will also perform Mozart’s majestic Symphony No.39, all under the baton of Royal Choral Society Music Director Richard Cooke.
The Royal Choral Society has been performing the choral masterpieces ever since its formation for the opening of the Royal Albert Hall in 1871, including the UK premières of Verdi’s Requiem in 1875, and Dvorak’s Stabat Mater in 1884, both concerts conducted by their composers.
