Programme Note

After opening with one of the extraordinary works for viol consort that so excited Purcell’s musical imagination, and a contemporary piece inspired by it, the Ryedale Festival, famous for its Coffee Concerts, presents the world premiere of a new coffee-inspired work by David Gordon. It features recorder soloist (and BBC Young Musician of the Year finalist) Charlotte Barbour-Condini and an array of percussion instruments from the main coffee-growing countries. Finally, Sir Thomas Allen heads the cast for one of the most comic and quirky pieces ever to come from the pen of J.S. Bach: a mini-opera about a coffee-addicted girl and her father who longs to find her a respectable husband, heard here in the first performance of a new translation by John Warrack, with the moral ‘drinking coffee is natural!’

Coffee/tea/soft drinks and biscuits served from 10am–10.45am
