Programme Note
This event is now scheduled to take place in September. Two of the finest – and contrasting – late romantic piano quintets form the core of this delightful recital. Dvorak’s lyrical and tuneful work from 1887 is full of sunshine and warmth, imbued with Czech song and dance styles. Elgar wrote his glorious work in 1918-9, inspired by summer in Sussex, yet touched by typical nostalgia and also bearing the impact of WWI. The Sibelius is a lovely “seamless stream of melody”. John Lenehan has arranged Debussy’s prelude from La Damoiselle Elue – a cantata inspired by the painting and poetry of Gabriel Dante Rossetti!
The Rossetti Ensemble was created in 2018 from longstanding collaborations between pianist John Lenehan, violinists Martyn Jackson and Sara Trickey, violist Sarah-Jane Bradley and cellist Tim Lowe. Named after Dante Gabriel, the eminent British poet and Pre-Raphaelite artist, they are passionate about the repertoire of the era and composers who derived inspiration from his work during the late romantic period and early 20th Century.
