Programme Note
Busoni's Second Violin Sonata dates from 1900 and is dedicated to the memory of the Czech violinist and composer Ottokar Novacek who died in that year. Modelled on Beethoven's Op 109 and including a set of variations on a Bach chorale as its finale, it looks forward to Busoni's later works.
Composed while he was a prisoner of war and scored for the musicians available to him at the camp, Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time is a profound, otherworldly work inspired by the Book of Relevation, which seems to touch the far edges of human experience in its breadth of expression
