Programme Note
Massed choirs and orchestra will gather at Portsmouth Guildhall on Saturday 9 May at 19:30 for the Portsmouth 100 Sing Gala Concert, celebrating the city’s centenary. The programme highlights music linked to Portsmouth, including three works by Freda Swain, the city’s leading 20th-century composer, championed by Professor George Burrows, who will also present a free lecture-recital. A new commission, Portsmouth: Stone, Sand and Song, premieres alongside favourites such as Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, Parry’s Blest Pair of Sirens, Rutter's Gloria, McDowall's Ave Maris Stella and Jerusalem, and Walton’s Portsmouth Point. The event is supported by Portsmouth City Council. Full price tickets cost £18.70, which are available from the Guildhall.
