Programme Note
Love, longing and friendship in an evening of classical music performed by pianist Clara Rodriguez and literary readings.
Rodriguez brings her eloquent style to a moving programme that includes works by Debussy, Ravel, Hahn and Piazzolla. The music is interspersed by readings of Proust's letters to Hahn and poems by Verlaine and Bertrand.
Clair de Lune, Clair de Lune, Verlaine's poem, prompted Debussy’s Suite bergamasque, while Ravel’s Ondine was sparked by Aloysius Bertrand's post-romantic poem of the same name.
Corentin Chassard joins Clara Rodriguez for Debussy’s Sonata in D minor for cello and piano, dedicated to the lives lost during World War One.
Marcel Proust said, ‘Everything I have ever done has always been thanks to Reynaldo’. In this concert, Rodriguez introduces music by the Venezuelan-born Reynaldo Hahn, with whom the French writer had an intense and lasting friendship. Freya Goldmark and Clara Rodriguez will perform his violin Sonata.
Caribbean bolero Historia de un amor by Carlos Almarán closes the concert.
