Programme Note
Harrison Birtwistle's 80th birthday celebrations continue with a performance of The Axe Manual by Colin Currie and Tamara Stefanovich.
The work is named after American pianist Emmanuel Ax and written for piano & percussion.
It forms part of a wide-ranging programme that epitomises the startling creative energy and groundbreaking invention of the man The Times described as 'one of the most gifted composers of his generation'.
Spanning music previously described as 'invigorating' and 'volitile', the musical landscape of The Axe Manual also encompasses a slow middle section, full of ethereal mystery.
The programme also contains music by Messiaen, a composer who was a great source of inspiration to Birtwistle.
Currie, a Southbank Centre Artist in Residence has been described by The Spectator as 'the world's finest and most daring percussionist'.
