Programme Note

Contrapunctus performs motets by the two finest composers of the German Baroque, Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach, including works for the major churches of Leipzig. Our programme includes Bach’s ebullient Lobet den Herrn and his monumental chorale-motet Jesu meine Freude. Schütz dedicated his motet collection Geistliche Chor-Musik (1648) to Leipzig city council and the famous choir of St Thomas’s Church. As well as the richly scored motets from this collection, the concert includes solos, duets, and trios from Schütz’s Kleine geistliche Concerte.
