Programme Note
The Royal Choral Society has sung at the Royal Albert Hall every Christmas since 1872. This year the choir celebrates its 150th Christmas, and its 150th anniversary, in its spiritual home.
Its 2022 festive programme is packe with glorious carols old and new, including a few to mark its special anniversary. It’s not just the Royal Choral Society that celebrates its 150th; this year saw the 150th birthday of composer Vaughan Williams, as well as the 150th anniversary of the first publication of Christina Rossetti’s evocative poem ‘In the Bleak Midwinter’. This year our thoughts will be with the people of Ukraine: the programme includes Roxanna Panufnik’s setting of a beautiful Ukrainian carol 'Spy Isuse Spy' (Sleep Jesus Sleep) alongside the famous 'Carol of the Bells' by Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych. Special guest, Soprano Mary Bevan, will perform solos from Messiah among others, and there are traditional carols for the audience to join in singing too.
There is no better way to kick off your Christmas than with these seasonal tunes at this stunning venue. The Royal Albert Hall Christmas concerts are very popular so do book early!
