Programme Note
Immensely popular in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Catherine, ou La belle fermière is a comic French opera that tells a tale of mistaken identity. The beautiful farmer, Catherine, escapes to the French Alps, leaving behind her previous life as an abused wife. The libertine Fierval vies for her love, but it is ultimately the lord disguised as a peasant, Lussan, who wins the farmer’s hand in marriage.
Join us for a staged reading of this (proto)feminist tale, celebrating one of France’s most illustrious woman composers of all time. The event will be followed by a talkback featuring the production’s co-directors, Caroline Gleason-Mercier and Sophia Sakellaridis Mangoura.
The concert will take place in the Forsyth Room of the Royal College of Music.
