Programme Note
Our new season fittingly starts with Liszt’s exploration of the beginning, Les Preludes. Aside from its title, the glorious romantic imagery of his most celebrated symphonic poem is a delightful way to start the evening, its melodies evolving from implicit love statements to jubilant fanfares.
As Napoleon's army besieged Vienna, Beethoven resolutely penned his Fifth and final piano concerto, his intentional choice of key reflecting that of his triumphant Eroica symphony. With Beethoven’s groundbreaking vision demanding the best from performer and instrument alike, we’re in safe hands as Sir Stephen Hough masterfully leads us through this magnificent concerto that wholeheartedly justifies itself as the Emperor.
Premiering in Paris in 1910, his first commission of the legendary Ballet Russes, The Firebird, propelled young Stravinsky to international stardom. His 1945 Suite distils the evocative sound of his breakthrough score, its harmonies subtly suggesting both the supernatural and mortal worlds as the heroic Prince Ivan and radiant Firebird explore Kastchei's petrifying castle. The intensely savage Infernal Dance, the gentle Berceuse, and joyous Finale conclude this masterpiece which revolutionised rhythm.
