Programme Note
First full London performance since 1922 of one of the Old Testament’s most stirring stories told through Hubert Parry’s moving choral music.
Parry’s first oratorio was an instant success – full of vigorous choruses and dramatic solo roles. It contains the melody that, as ‘Repton’, became the favourite hymn ‘Dear Lord and Father of Mankind’. Yet it has been forgotten for nearly a century – until now.
Revered by Elgar and teacher to Vaughan- Williams and Holst, Parry was highly influential in the development of British composers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His reputation lives on as a symphonist and as a composer of choral music.
Also, at 6pm, a pre-concert talk: Professor Jeremy Dibble explores the history behind Parry’s oratorio Judith, from its commission, creation and first performance to its subsequent neglect, and its position in the oratorio canon. Admission free. This talk is 30 minutes long.
