Programme Note
The Russian virtuoso Arcadi Volodos makes a rare visit to London. He devotes his recital to Schubert, Brahms and Schumann.
After opening with enchanting pieces by the youthful Schubert, he continues the first half with Brahms's Klavierstücke Op.118, six exquisitely-wrought short works that explore rich-textured moods.
Schumann's Kinderszenen offers nostalgic and evocative portraits of childhood and to close, the Fantasie in C major is a romantic masterpiece on a grand scale. It pays tribute to Beethoven and Liszt, but above all to the composer's passion for the young pianist Clara Wieck, whom he later married.
'Volodos is particularly good at enigmatic mood kaleidoscopes, and this makes him an outstanding Schumann interpreter.' (Abendzeitung, Munich).
