Programme Note

A captivating fantasy programme that offsets Berlioz's groundbreaking Symphonie fantastique with Beethoven's overture Coriolan.

Berlioz's work climaxes in an orgiastic, opium-fuelled witches' Sabbath. Whereas Beethoven's overture is a striking evocation of Coriolanus' story, the gallant Roman general who was destroyed by his overweening pride.

6pm at Royal Festival Hall - Pre-concert recital. Recital by a winner of the Martin Musical Scholarship Fund.
