Programme Note

Featuring three well loved works by Elgar - The Spirit of England  - written by Elgar at a time when he was greatly affected by suffering caused by the First World War he captures the sadness without becoming maudlin; Sea Pictures  - the very first work composed by Elgar after he completed his Enigma Variations which includes a song with lyrics by his wife Alice; and Music Makers - his last substantial work for choir and orchestra in which he clothes the words in unmistakable passion, and they are enhanced by the detailed and masterly orchestral comment.
