Programme Note

For their Spring concert, Bracknell Choral Society is delighted to be performing Dvorak’s Stabat Mater, a moving oratorio for choir, orchestra and soloists, and Dvorak’s best-known and most-often performed sacred work. The work is a setting of a medieval Latin hymn on the sorrow of Mary, mother of Jesus at the Crucifixion and was composed by Dvorak as a personal response to the tragic deaths of his three young children. The rich choral melodies and beautiful orchestral passages take the listener from Mary’s deep sadness to a tranquil and hopeful conclusion.
