Programme Note
In a lovely intimate setting, the London Chamber Ensemble ("passionate persuasive advocacy...gripping interpretations" Gramophone), directed by violinist Madeleine Mitchell, performs one of the greatest string quartets, Beethoven's late work which includes the Heilige Dankgesang which many consider the pinnacle of the repertoire. It is paired by the beautiful short Luchinushka (Lament on a Russian folkune) by Herbert Howells, composed in 1917 originally for violin and piano and arranged by Madeleine for string quartet. This originally featured in the LCE's Royal Philharmonic Society Award film from the V&A during the exhibition earlier this year, Fabergé: Romance to Revolution with exquisite images by Wartksi and archive material of Howells and Tchaikovsky from the RCM (available on youtube - Madeleine Mitchell on Music and Art). 6.30-7 wine is served, followed by an hour of the introduced concert, then a delicious buffet supper provided by the host, esteemed food writer, Michelle Berriedale-Johnson. SPECIALCHRISTMAS OFFER - 2 tickets for £50 if booked before Christmas.
