However, for Ellis Arey, an encounter with the sound of classical piano at an early age, was the beginning of a love affair. With sights set on stardom, and through the encouragement of his mother, aged 10, Ellis, began the hard work at home on a digital keyboard. Now under the tutelage of Jakob Fichert, Ellis spends 10 hours a day at All Steinway School, The Leeds Conservatoire, practising on one of the many magnificent Steinway concert grand pianos. Ellis had been accepted to a London Conservatoire and contemplated a move southwards to progress his studies, but in face of financial concerns, remarked “It doesn’t matter where you learn as long as you pass exams and work hard.” He is vocal about his desire to open up a traditionally highbrow closed world of classical piano to a wider audience. Victor of Leeds Conservatoire 2022 Piano Competition held annually at Besbrode Pianos in Leeds, Ellis was a worthy recipient of £500 prize money and solo recital. Ellis is playing his solo recital presenting a delectable mix of Beethoven, Brahms, Bowen and Liszt. Ellis will be playing on the Steinway Model D on loan from Leeds Town Hall.
