Programme Note
'For the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning' wrote JS Bach on the title page of his labyrinthine compendiumThe Well-Tempered Clavier. The twenty-four preludes and fugues of Book 1 offer an inexhaustible variety of musical ideas and contrapuntal experimentation. The Oxford Piano Festival's President, Sir Andras Schiff, whose all-Bach concert became a talking point of the 2015 Proms, will take his place at the keyboard for an uninterrupted recital of Book I of Bach's monumental essay in keyboard writing, set perfectly within the intimate Baroque surroundings of Sir Christopher Wren's Sheldonian Theatre.
