Winter Journey

Winterreise - Winter Journey - was written a year before the end of Schubert’s short life. Based on poems by Wilhelm Müller, the piece is a cycle of 24 songs for voice and piano. The wanderer's winter journey begins as he leaves the house of his beloved and travels through a winter landscape that leads him to question his identity, the conditions of his existence and the meaning of life. The second half is filled with hope and despair, ending with him sharing his misery with a beggar street musician - the hurdy gurdy man. About Oddur and Somi Icelandic baritone Oddur Jónsson graduated from the Mozarteum University Salzburg with Distinction, receiving the Lilli Lehmann Medal. Oddur made his Icelandic Opera debut as Rodrigo in Verdi’s Don Carlo, and was awarded Most Promising Artist in at the Icelandic Music Awards. Significant operatic roles include Wolfram in Tannhäuser, Figaro in Il barbiere di Siviglia, Don Giovanni and Conte Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro. On the concert stage he made his Paris debut in 2015, singing Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde with the Paris Opera Ballet. Competition successes include first prize in the International Brahms Competition (2013), Best Lied & Oratorio Performer and Schubert Prizes in the Francesc Viñas Competition (2014), and third prize in the International Schubert Lied-Duo Competition in Dortmund. South Korean born New Zealand pianist, Somi Kim graduated from the Royal Academy of Music last year, receiving a DipRAM and the HRH Princess Alice the Duchess of Gloucester’s Prize. Somi is the winner of the 2017 Royal Over-Seas League Accompanist Prize, Gerald Moore Award for Accompanists and the AESS Patricia Routledge National English Song Accompanist Prize. Sought after as a chamber musician, song accompanist and répétiteur, Somi is a Samling Artist and a Yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Musicians.
