Programme Note

University Symphony Orchestra’s sold-out autumn concert was greeted with rapturous applause, and a programme of Sibelius and Arvo Pärt is likely to prove just as popular! Sibelius sketched large parts of his Second Symphony while on a trip to Italy in 1901. After completing the work on his return to Finland, he conducted the premiere of the Symphony in the March of 1902. A notable success with audiences at the time, it remains one of Sibelius’s most popular works. Arvo Pärt's hauntingly beautiful piece for string orchestra and bell, Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, was written following Britten's death in 1976. One of the earliest examples of the Estonian composer's hallmark tintinnabuli style, the work is beloved by audiences for its purity and simplicity.
