Programme Note

Saariaho’s eerie and dramatic work Terra Memoria is dedicated to ‘those departed’. Its Latin title refers to the words earth and memory, and like memory, some aspects of the piece change over time while others remain fixed. Final-year student Elena Stamp is the soloist in Colin Matthew’s orchestration of Britten’s song cycle A Charm of Lullabies, and John Smith – who graduated from the University of York in August 2020 and is currently studying at the RNCM – plays Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto no. 2 in a performance that was originally scheduled for February 2021 but postponed due to the pandemic. An endearing and lyrical work, the D minor Piano Concerto was written just after Mendelssohn’s honeymoon in the summer of 1837.
