Add to my Calendar 02-05-2025 19:30 02-05-2025 21:30 36 Celebrating Creativity in Hospitals (NHS workers/volunteers £5, wheelchair users and carers free) A classical music charitable concert designed as a thank you to NHS workers and volunteers, who can buy tickets at the heavily discounted price of £5. All money raised at the concert will go towards Horatio’s Garden, who produce beautiful gardens at NHS spinal injury centres to aid patients with their recovery. Because of their link with spinal injury, wheelchair users and their carers can also attend the concert for free. As well as favourite works by Beethoven and Mendelssohn, the programme includes the UK premiere of British composer Michael Stimpson’s work for cello and piano, Tales from the 15th Floor. This piece reflects Stimpson’s time in ICU at Charing Cross Hospital after a life-changing illness. Aged 29, Stimpson was left unconscious and paralysed in intensive care for four and a half months after contracting the rare neurological condition Guillain-Barré Syndrome. He recalls the trauma of experiencing vivid hallucinations from the morphine and the frustration of only being able to communicate by blinking at a spoken alphabet. A lengthy recovery followed but Michael has been registered blind ever since, changing the course of his life as a classical musician. Smith Square Hall, London DD/MM/YYYY
