Programme Note

At a time when we are commemorating the start of World War 2, it is appropriate that Exeter Choral Society’s next charity concert should feature Jenkins’ The Armed Man, essentially an anti-war piece written as a dedication to the victims of the Kosovo crisis. It charts the growing menace of a descent into war interspersed with moments of reflection, and tells a powerful story of hope for the future.

Those who are familiar with classical music will know The Armed Man to be dramatic, evocative and hugely atmospheric. For others it may well change your opinion.

By complete contrast, the second half will feature the Gloria, one of Vivaldi’s best-known compositions. This sublime and sunny piece has many instantly recognizable choruses, is truly joyous and cannot fail to raise the spirits.
