Programme Note
The CLS season finale is a banquet of beauty and joy that gives you generous helpings of Mozart and Haydn, seasoned with hint of surprise. On the menu are excerpts from Mozart’s seldom-played ‘Thamos, King of Egypt’ as well as his sublime Sinfonia Concertante and Haydn’s fun and light-hearted ‘Surprise’ Symphony.
Mozart and Haydn are names that have become synonymous with the best that classical music has to offer, so it’s easy to forget that some of their music was new and sometimes revolutionary in their time. Mozart’s wonderful Sinfonia Concertante for violin and viola, influenced by the new instrumental forms and styles he encountered during his journey to Mannheim and Paris, is testament to his joy in experimenting with new instrumental sound combinations and possibilities. And Haydn even admitted that when making his debut in London, his intention was to surprise the London public with something new (and to outdo his student Pleyel) with his Symphony no. 94 in G, nowadays commonly known as the ‘Surprise’ symphony.
Following this path of exploration and renewal, CLS is joined for the first time by conductor, cellist and keyboardist, Jonathan Cohen, an artist who is well renowned for his passion and commitment to chamber music and specialism in period instruments. Taking audiences on a journey that explores how music from the past can be adapted and renewed this performance will demonstrate how we continue to excite, challenge and inspire London audiences with our seriously informal events.
