Organ Recital: Paul Provost

Programme Note

In 1921 the famous French organist and composer Marcel Dupré gave a recital on the world’s largest pipe organ – in the Grand Court of Wanamaker’s department store in Philadelphia – and improvised a four movement organ symphony depicting the life of Jesus. That improvisation was the basis for the monumental Symphonie-Passion which is the centre piece of this eclectic programme featuring works by two leading American composers – a transcription of Samuel Barber’s ever-popular Adagio and Charles Ives’ anarchic take on a traditional tune recognised by British audiences as the National Anthem.
