Programme Note
On Saturday 21st March at 7.30pm a concert in Southwell Minster gives you the opportunity to hear music for ballet by Tchaikovsky and Ravel, as well as an exciting and beautiful saxophone concerto.
The Sleeping Beauty music by Tchaikovsky was written in 1890 and became immensely popular, although surprisingly was only first performed in London in 1921. The music played in this concert includes excerpts from the full score including the Sleeping Beauty Waltz.
Ravel’s Mother Goose was written as a piano duet but Ravel orchestrated the five movement suite into a full ballet, also including a Sleeping Beauty Pavane. To the original five movements were added two more movements and four new interludes. It is a delightful and enchanting work that brings to life the magical world of fairy tales.
Between these two popular works, Portuguese saxophonist Joao Luis Correia will captivate us with his virtuosity in Henri Tomasi’s colourful saxophone writing. Tomasi wrote this Concerto as an exam piece for the Paris Conservatoire in 1949. It is in two movements with a mysterious, foreboding opening as an introduction to a lively Allegro.
