Programme Note
Music of awesome beauty by Richard Wagner, Richard Strauss and Debussy is offered by the Nottingham Philharmonic Orchestra in the wonderful Southwell Minster on Saturday 23rd June at 7.30pm.
Wagner’s Prelude and Liebestod is from the opening and very end of the opera Tristan and Isolde, encapsulation the essence of romantic love. Strauss wrote several magnificent tone poems in the 1880s including Tod and Verklarung (Death and transfiguration) which concentrates on the glorious transfiguration following death.
Debussy’s marvellous symphonic piece La Mer is the finest orchestral evocation of the moods of the sea. We also offer four of the twenty-four piano preludes written by Debussy and orchestrated by British composer Colin Matthews, commissioned by Sir Mark Elder and the Halle orchestra.
