Programme Note
Hertfordshire Chorus under its conductor David Temple performs an evening of grand and moving Mozart music in its first concert here in 20 months. The Mass in C Minor (the ‘Great Mass’) is more ambitious and elaborate than even his Requiem. Although (like the Requiem) it was never completed, it is a wonderful work on the grandest scale and is considered by many scholars to be one of the greatest mass settings of all time. Mozart’s Solemn Vespers (Vesperae solennes de Confessore), the last piece written before he left Salzburg Cathedral in 1780, contains the famous, sublimely beautiful Laudate Dominum for soprano and chorus. The concert begins with the short, serene motet, Ave Verum Corpus.
This is programme is a real treat for all lovers of choral music, and St Albans Cathedral is the perfect setting for a performance.
