Part of the Sonoro Workshops and Concerts 2019 Cycle

Add to my Calendar 29-06-2019 17:30 29-06-2019 19:30 36 Choral Inspirations - Cardiff Concert Sonoro has commissioned six British composers to each write a work inspired by a ‘choral classic’ for its new project for 2019, Inspirations. The composers are Cheryl Frances-Hoad, Russell Hepplewhite, Joanna Marsh, James McCarthy, Will Todd (Sonoro’s Honorary Patron) and Janet Wheeler.  These have been inspired by classic partner pieces by Brahms, Bruckner, Rahcmaninov, Rheinberger, Stanford and Tallis.  As well as introducing six new works into the choral repertoire, Sonoro aims to encourage amateur and community choirs to have the confidence to sing more ambitious and contemporary music. The new commissions have all been written and at suitable level for amateur choirs, without being simplistic.  Each new piece and its classic partner-piece has been recorded by Sonoro, and will be released online as freely accessible video and audio tracks. The tracks are meant as tools to help amateur choirs learning the works, as well as being there for anyone to listen to and enjoy. From June to October, Sonoro will take all twelve pieces on tour for workshops in Cardiff, Newcastle, Birmingham and London and side-by-side performances by local choirs and Sonoro in the four cities.  The composers’ choices of choral classics, and the original classics are: Cheryl Frances-Hoad  Bogoroditse Dyevo Rachmaninov  Bogoroditse Dyevo  Russell Hepplewhite  How lovely are thy dwellings Brahms  Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen Joanna Marsh  Evening PrayerRheinberger Abendlied  James McCarthy  If ye love me Tallis If ye love me Will Todd  Locus iste Bruckner Locus iste  Janet Wheeler  Beati quorum via Stanford Beati quorum via Sonoro is conducted by Neil Ferris, with Michael Higgins, piano.
