Programme Note
Join us to celebrate our 25th anniversary with a year-long journey of sound during which we’ll experience the musical seasons throughout Europe.
We’ll set out in spring, the season of the choir’s first concert a quarter-century ago, and sing farewell to the English countryside with songs by Wilbye and Morley. Around Advent or Christmas our choral coach should have reached Germany to prize the heavenly harmonies of our hosts Praetorius, Schütz and Hassler – after which our itinerary leads to Italy for some carnivalesque counterpoint by Gabrieli, Willaert and Banchieri. Our party’s procession proceeds to Spain for luscious sounds of Lent by Lobo, Guerrero and De Victoria, and then venite! Easter is in Venice where Gabrieli, Croce and Di Lasso supply a sumptuous soundscape – before Byrd beckons us back to Britain to arrive, exhausted but exhilarated, in time for the subsequent spring.
We are proud to be joined on this journey by our anniversary travel companions, the Chelys Consort of Viols, who will pull all their festive strings for added celebratory sonority. There may be balloons and bubbles, and we’ve heard rumours of a large interval cake.
What a journey it has been! What a journey it will be! Join us! Venite!
