Programme Note
We include an exciting combination of music from different eras and different countries, all directed by Adam Summerhayes, a virtuosic violinist from Leicestershire who will play the solos in both a Vaughan Williams concerto and his own arrangements of Travellers Tales from ‘Gypsy Strings’.
Schubert wrote six German Dances for piano in 1824 but it was only in the 20th Century that they were transcribed in the classical style for orchestra by Webern. In total contrast we have the Fuga con Pajarillo, a lively and rhythmic piece of music written by Venezuelan Romero based on the Pajarillo dance.
Johann Christian Bach’s best known Symphony Op 18 No 2 is in three movements and was originally written as the overture to his opera Lucio Silla. His more famous father J S Bach wrote the famous Concerto for two violins and this inspired English composer Vaughan Williams to write Concerto Accademico for solo violin, played by Adam and strings, which will be followed by a short piece for small orchestra titled Harnham Down. Raff is a little-known composer from the 19th Century and we introduce his Sinfonietta written for wind instruments; a light-hearted work in four movements.
Finally, Adam will be charming us all with a couple of arrangements for solo violin from his ‘Gypsy Strings’ disc. It will be a lively and warming evening with interval refreshments.
