Programme Note
Our Musical Director for this concert is the talented composer, arranger and conductor Jack Capstaff who has just been nominated for the prestigious “4barsrest” Conductor of the Year award. One of the local brass bands he conducts, Derwent Brass has also been nominated for Band of the Year.
Jack has chosen four pieces including the wonderfully romantic Hebrides Overture by Mendelssohn. Our brilliant wind players get a chance to show off in the Decet for Winds by Enescu, written at the beginning of the 20th Century, followed by the Petite Suite for chamber orchestra by Absil, a Belgian composer. We conclude the concert with lively, lyrical music by Saint-Saens, a composer well-known for his Carnival of the Animals, who wrote his Second Symphony when he was only in his twenties.
