Programme Note
Midsummer Magic Comes to Surbiton
On Saturday 28 June Kingston Choral Society (KCS) returns to St Andrew’s Church, Surbiton, KT6 4DS to present Rhymes & Charms. A selection of charming songs from across five centuries which evokes green summer meadows and skies buzzing with life. There is a particular emphasis on the elusive magic of flying creatures, with bees, bats, ladybirds and crickets, featuring alongside birds of many feathers, including swans, cuckoos, crows, owls and magpies.
Contemporary composer Kerry Andrew’s Rhymes & Charms for Flyaway Things inspired the concert’s title. The piece was commissioned by Making Music after Andrew won their prize at the 2010 British Composer Awards. KCS Musical Director Andrew Griffiths’ imaginative programme juxtaposes this modern collection of “very sweet” songs about nature with well-loved renaissance madrigals, and further blends tradition with modernity with a performance of the beautifully harmonised arrangements of John Rutter’s folk song cycle, A Sprig of Thyme.
Andrew Griffiths will conduct the choir, accompanied by special guest, the distinguished pianist, Libby Burgess.
