Programme Note
This autumn’s programme celebrates together the vivid orchestral colours of Glazunov and the passionate lyricism of Rachmaninov.
Glazunov’s Cortège solennel, Op. 50, opens the concert with ceremonial grandeur and richly expressive orchestral writing. Rachmaninov’s much-loved Piano Concerto No. 2 follows, pairing sweeping melodies and dramatic intensity with moments of great tenderness, featuring pianist Michael Bostock.
After the interval, we return to Glazunov for the Raymonda Suite, Op. 57a, a sparkling selection from his celebrated ballet, filled with dance rhythms, elegance and sumptuous orchestral colour. Together, these works offer a journey through the splendour, romance and virtuosity of the late-Romantic Russian tradition.
