Programme Note
Sutton Symphony Orchestra present their latest concert.
David Hackbridge Johnson has had his music performed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Welsh National Opera, among others. His commission for Sutton Symphony Orchestra, River Wandle Suite, takes us along the Wandle from Carshalton Ponds, past the water grasses and mills into a rousing finale.
From the Wandle to the ocean – Elgar’s Sea Pictures set to music five poems inspired by the sea’s beauty, power and even danger, and are full of the same melodic richness that made his famous Enigma Variations such a success. And then there is Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony. From its foreboding opening to the lyrical second movement (largely considered some of the composer’s finest work) and the lilting rhythms of the third movement, it ends with a resounding and satisfyingly-brassy finale.
‘I am now busy with the new Symphony and wherever I go I have no thought for anything but my work, which must be such as to move the world — well, God grant that it may be so!’
Dvořák on his Symphony No 7
Sutton Symphony Orchestra is a group of orchestral music enthusiasts and amateur performers, primarily local to Sutton and South London, conducted by Philip Aslangul and led by Annmarie McDade. We are thrilled to be joined on-stage by London-based mezzo-soprano Maggie Cooper for this concert.
