Programme Note

Wagner's opera Tannhäuser, based on two German legends,  is a story of love and redemption, and it remarkable overture has long been a popular concert piece in its own right. It makes for a stirring opening to this concert, followed by Brahms' lyrical Violin Concerto. Here is elegance and serenity, and energy too, with Brahms' love of the Gypsy fiddle coming to the fore. And then there is Mahler's mighty Fifth Symphony. From its iconic opening trumpet call to its heart-rending Adagietto for strings, its one of those pieces that stays with you long after the final note.

Sutton Symphony Orchestra is a group of orchestra music enthusiasts and amateur performers, primarily local to Sutton, conducted by Philip Aslangul and led by Annmarie McDade. We are thrilled to be join on-stage by soloist and London-based violinist Emily Earl for this concert.
