Handel Coronation Anthems

South West London Choral Society

Add to my Calendar 13-07-2019 19:30 13-07-2019 21:30 36 Handel Coronation Anthems Composed in 1727 (Handel's first commissioned work as a newly naturalised British subject) for the coronation of King George II and Queen Caroline, Handel's four coronation anthems have entertained audiences for almost three centuries. In particular, the majestic grandeur of Zadok The Priest will be familiar to football fans, as it was the basis for the iconic and instantly recognisable anthem that has accompanied the prelude to all UEFA Champions League matches since its inception in 1992. The South West London Choral Society, aided by our friends from the Otranto Chamber Orchestra, will be bringing the original (and more bombastic!) Zadok back to life, together with the rest of the coronation anthems: Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened, The King Shall Rejoice and My Heart Is Inditing. Rounding off the programme (and giving the choir a well-deserved breather!) will be two of Handel's most divine organ concertos. The concert takes place in the appropriately magnificent setting of St. Anne’s Church, Wandsworth. All are welcome to attend, particularly younger fans of classical music, as under-15s are admitted free of charge. Tickets for adults are priced at £15 and are available either from www.swlcs.org.uk or on the door. Established in 1886, the South West London Choral Society is a professionally-led choir of amateur singers, bringing a variety of choral works, both famous and little-known, to the community of South West London. It is a welcoming choir, open to adults of all ages and backgrounds with an interest in rehearsing and performing choral music written by composers from Bach to Brahms, from Victoria to Vaughan Williams, from Mozart to Mendelssohn. The choir meets in Balham Baptist Church on Mondays at 7.30pm, and rehearses over the course of three terms per year, starting in September, January and April. If you would like to join us or give choral singing a try, then please feel free to come to one of our rehearsals at the start of term, or find out more information at www.swlcs.org.uk.
