Programme Note

The South West London Choral Society presents a glorious evening of choral music written by two of the most prolific composing brothers of the 18th century, Joseph and Michael Haydn.

The elder brother Joseph's electrifying Nelson Mass, written more or less at the epicentre in time and place of the Napoleonic wars, provides the powerful beating heart of the programme. A collection of exquisitely crafted and intricate motets written by the younger Michael, a fine composer held arguably in higher regard than his older sibling by his contemporaries than his relative obscurity today might suggest, round out what promises to be a beautiful evening of music, featuring the sumptuous voices of this well-loved amateur choir, now in its 138th year, and the sparkling tones of our line-up of guest soloists, all under the skilful baton of the society's musical director, Martin Everett.
