Programme Note
The Durham Singers summer concert celebrates the joy of music, and is based on settings of the psalm text "Sing unto the Lord a new song", by British and German composers from the renaissance, the baroque and the present day. The programme includes Purcell’s verse anthem “Sing unto the Lord” with an extensive bass solo sung by Anthony Smith. The second half leads up to Bach's great motet for double choir Singet dem Herrn with choral and organ settings by Bach's predecessors of the chorale Nun lob mein Seel that Bach uses in the central movement of his motet.
