Programme Note

Welcome to St Chad’s Cathedral’s Thursday Live Summer Organ Festival 2019. To celebrate this summer’s cleaning and overhaul of the instrument by Nicholson & Co Ltd, we are proud to present weekly lunchtime organ recitals throughout August and to welcome three visiting organists in addition to our regular Thursday Live home team.

Recitals are 40 minutes in length and admission is free, though we do gratefully receive any donations via a retiring collection basket, the proceeds of which go to support the series and the care and maintenance of the fine Walker organ.

Following this Summer Organ Festival our Thursday Live recitals continue on the first Thursday of every month at 1:15pm.

The organ of St Chad’s Cathedral dates from 1993 and was built by J. W. Walker & Sons as part of the Cathedral’s 150th anniversary restoration. There are 40 speaking stops and it is considered one of the finest organs in the Midlands.

Thursday Live was established in 2008 by Paul Carr at St Paul’s Birmingham. The series transferred to St Chad’s Cathedral in June 2016.
