Programme Note
The Phoenix Singers of Shrewsbury have had a long relationship with the String Orchestra from Celle in northern Germany. They last performed together in England in 2012 when they presented Bach’s St John Passion. This year they combine to give us two of the ‘greats’ of the choral repertoire: Mozart’s ‘Requiem’ and Handel’s ‘Dixit Dominus’.
Phoenix conductor Richard Walker said: “We are delighted to be welcoming our friends from Germany once more for a week of music-making, culminating in performances of two major works – Mozart’s ‘Requiem’ which needs little introduction, and Handel’s ‘Dixit Dominus’, which is one of the most demanding of his oratorios, while also being one of the most audience-friendly – full of melody and excitement. As usual we have an excellent line-up of soloists with Sarah Westwood, Imogen Garner, Tim Kennedy and Richard Moore; the Streicherensemble Celle together with our own wind and brass players will provide a first-class accompaniment.
