Telemann – Overture-Suite in E minor “L’Omphale”
We begin our concert today with a sparkling Baroque suite by Georg Philipp Telemann. It’s all that survives from an opera inspired by the Greek myth of Queen Omphale and Hercules. In this tale, power and roles are reversed—Hercules becomes the Queen’s servant, even donning women's clothes. Telemann captures this playful spirit through elegant dances and dramatic contrasts, blending French court style with clever storytelling. It's witty, imaginative, and full of charm.
Howells – Elegy for Viola, String Quartet and String Orchestra
Next, our conductor Dan Shilladay will take the solo viola part in Elegy by English composer Herbert Howells, written in 1917 during World War I. Scored for viola, string quartet, and orchestra, it’s a heartfelt tribute to a fallen friend—and later also to Howells’ own son. With its soaring viola solo and lush string textures, the piece speaks quietly but deeply of grief, remembrance, and beauty in sorrow.
Suk – Serenade for Strings in E-flat major
We close our concert with the Serenade for Strings by Josef Suk, written when he was just 18 and encouraged by his teacher—and later father-in-law—Antonín Dvořák. It’s a radiant, youthful work, full of grace and charm. Each of the four movements brings fresh lyricism and energy, from gentle romance to joyful dance. It remains one of Josef Suk’s most popular and frequently performed compositions—a youthful yet enduring gem in the string repertoire.
