Programme Note

Our summer concert celebrates the diversity of Bach’s output by placing two cantatas alongside a motet and the first of the orchestral suites. We are thrilled to be welcoming back the soprano Jessica Leary for Ich bin vergnügt mit meinen Glücke, a wonderfully uplifting solo cantata. Jessica also joins us for Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich, Bach’s earliest cantata and the inspiration for the finale of Brahms’s Fourth Symphony. We open our concert with what is perhaps Bach’s best-loved motet, Jesu, meine Freude, a virtuoso masterpiece encompassing every facet of Bach’s remarkable word-painting.
