Programme Note

With the single exception of Le Tombeau de Couperin, all of Ravel's seminal piano works are represented in this programme marking the 150th anniversary of the composer's birth. Where better to start than the Lisztian felicities of Jeux d'eau - widely regarded as music history's first fully fledged Impressionist piano work.

Ravel's preoccupation with the Viennese waltz brings us Valses nobles et sentimentales, a vivid dance suite culminating in a nostalgic apotheosis coda.

Graphically rendered portraits of a water nymph, hanging corpse and a malevolent dwarf form the masterly triptych that is Gaspard de la nuit.

A lifelong love of Mozart declares itself in the clean, cool lines of the Sonatine followed by the early Pavane pour une Infante défunte whose grave beauty first endeared Ravel to his audience.

To conclude, French impressionism reaches its apogee in Miroirs, evoking turbulent water, bells, moths, birds and a fiery picture postcard from Spain.

There will be an interval with free refreshments.
